Learning How To Fish

God’s will is for us to multiply our lives as followers Jesus into the lives of others. What we have been learning lately is how He always blesses His promises (Matt 28 “Make disciples of the nations”). If we, as His people, decide to start obeying His call for our lives, to make disciples and pour our lives into others, then it is guaranteed by Christ Himself that people will come to walk with Jesus. But it is not a lackadaisical “discipleship”/”talk about our problems” style that we often see in our culture. No, the discipleship Jesus calls us to is radical and will look quite different than much of what we call discipleship in our culture today. Christ wants us to literally pour our lives into people (time, resources, prayers) so that they might see a true picture of the power of the Spirit in an individuals’ life. He has called us to be fishers of men but so often we as the people of God don’t know how to fish. I am fully convinced that if we return to the Word of God as our source for strength and sustenance then we will see God work in amazing ways like we have never seen before. He is worth it!

God has been showing us lately how short this life is when you think about eternity. Eternity is real and the Lord has us on this earth for one reason: to make disciples of the nations. That includes where we live and not just supporting some missionary to go do the work for you. He has taught us the importance of doing this all the time and prayerfully going about life looking for opportunities to share the Gospel with lost people who need Life Himself. Nothing in this world compares with knowing Christ personally and watching Him provide for our needs as we step out in faith trusting that He who created the entire universe can certainly do things like heal my back (Aug 1, 2010) or provide for needs on the exact day we needed them (Jan 9). There is nothing like it! I would not trade the life I have now for all the money, fame, prestige, and power in the world. By no means has Jesus called His people to a comfortable life that seeks to flee from hardship and trials. No, this world is not our home and biblically, if we are doing what He wants us to do then we will have a life full of hard times, pain, persecution and more (look at the disciples), but there is nothing like it in all the world to see the Sovereign God if the universe show Himself to you in ways that you never thought imaginable.

These are just a few things that the Lord has been teaching us as we prepare to go to Malawi in a few months. We are ordinary people reading God’s Word and by the Holy Spirit, daily obeying Him.

Romans 1:14-16 “I am in debt both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. That is why I am so eager to preach the Gospel also to you….I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes…”
